Early Photograph of Cave of the Nativity circa 1880. Black and white photo. 8.5" x 11." The Cave of the Nativity in Bethlehem is traditionally considered the birthplace of Jesus. Steps from The Church of the Nativity lead down to the subterranean cave. Rectangular in shape, the cave measures about 12 metres by 3 metres. The cave is decorated with objects of devotion and on feast days the cave is lit by 48 hanging lamps. Titled "335 Grotte de la Nativite. - Cave of the Nativity" at the bottom with photographer's name "Bonfils" signed on the negative. Good condition.
